1960's

Twiggy was one of the main fashion icons in the 1960's. She inspired every girl with what she wore and how she wore it. Often seen in mini skirts and patterned dresses, she made a statement with her clothes and people admired her for it. Her long, thick eyelashes and blonde hair were her signature looks and she always looked bold and strong in her photographs. In this clip, you can see some examples of Twiggy's fashion throughout the 1960s and how she was an inspiration.

Pyschadelia was a subculture with the message of Love Not War in the 1960s and it was made up of people who enjoyed hippie style music and crazily patterned clothing. Granny Takes A Trip is a legendary boutique from the 60's that sold Pyschadelia clothing.

The boutique has sold some iconic pieces of clothing that have held a deeper meaning to some people due to personal attachments. It was extremely popular with everyone including musician George Harrison who shopped in there. The graphic designs for the boutique have been inspired by the Pyschadelic style that made up album covers and posters at this time. Many of these advertisements/graphics are built up of hidden meaning with certain imagery being covered up. This was the representation that morals were loosening as the Pyschadelic culture grew and grew.

This is one example of a graphic that was made to advertise Granny Takes A Trip

Within this image, there are lots of smaller images within the background. The pastel colours and overall calming feel of the graphic shows that it is Pyschadelic which links well to the boutique. However, you could portray the mushrooms in the background of the image as a representation of the drugs that people took if they were a part of this subculture. This is because of the term 'magic mushrooms', some people may link this image with that term.

In this clip you can see the journey of the boutique and examples of the styles that they sold in there in the 1960's.

Audrey Hepburn was a main fashion icon in the 1950s. She featured in Breakfast at Tiffany's and various other films and inspire girls everywhere to look just like her. She looks like the typical woman in the 1950's; perfect, neat hair, pearl necklace, formal clothes and sunglasses.

Marilyn Monroe is another important style icon from the 50's. She was a sex symbol in this era so she was popular with both men and women. Her signature blonde hair and red lips look seductive and make her memorable as a model. In this image I found of her while researching the 1950's, she is posing in her usual pose with her eyes slightly shut and mouth slightly open to represent that she is a sex symbol. Marilyn shows some of the typical 50's trends like the Jamal wave hair, red lips, cat eyes and a beauty spot. She makes her beauty look effortless and was an inspiration to all women in this era.

Crazes

A craze is something that people have got to have! It is madness to be involved and is not always needed or liked. They last a really short time and are usually regretted by the people who followed them. There are many different varieties of crazes including clothes, accessories, games and food. The image above showcases the latest craze called loom bands. They are extremely popular with children and some teenagers and adults have also grown to like them. They are bracelets that you make using small rubber bands and are available in all different colours and patterns.

They are similar to Scoubidou, also known as 'scoobies', which is a knotting craft used to make bracelets, key rings, jewellery, pen covers and lots of different shapes. They were a craze in 2004 and have now been replaced by loom bands. These were also available in many different colours and they had a range of glitter bands that were very popular.

FADS

A FAD is something that a high proportion of people experience. They do not come back and they are not always practical. There are many varieties of FADS that people go through including fashion items, accessories, hairstyles, footwear, types of games, home ware and food.
I found this image online of a FAD where people had there nails done to look like claws. In this image, 4 different designs are shown but there are lots of different ones that girls would have done when this was popular. You can also see how small diamonds/gems were added to the nails to make them 3D. As this became more and more popular, 3D bows, hearts and other shapes were also available to have on your nails.

Trends

Trends are looks that are usually available in all stores and have appeared on runways. They meet customer needs and are seen nationally and internationally. There are many varieties of trends as they are not just formed within the fashion industry, there are also social, environmental, political and cultural trends. They last the longest as they last longer than fads and crazes.
The image above is one I found when doing online research based around trends. It links to the topic well as it showcases a variety of examples of the popular co-ordinate trend from this summer. These 5 outfits show different patterns, styles and materials that this trend is available in and as they are all celebrities wearing the clothes, this also shows that many trends stem from what celebrities are seen wearing as they influence a lot of peoples fashion choices.
